Why You Must Have A Backup Plan for Your Career?

Backup career plan

You wake up early, dress up sharp, and reach your office on time, put up with your horrible boss and colleagues and stay till late as often as your job demands. You trade your time for money and invest whatever is left of your disposable time to learn and grow better in your career. But what if it still does not work out?

Private sector jobs hardly have any job security these days, no matter what position you are.

It is no hidden fact that millions, if not billions of people have lost their jobs due to the current global crisis.

In April 2020 alone,12.2 crore Indians lost their jobs, reported by CMIE, and published by all media houses.

Some companies are courteous enough to give at least a notice period so people get a bit of time to find their next adventure. However, many companies can give some terrible surprises. You would have probably heard that Uber fired 3500 employees on a 3-minute zoom call. A friend of mine, who works for Symantec told me about his experience,

“They don’t tell people in advance, rather when they reach office, the access card doesn’t work and they are asked by the  security to meet the HR to get their full and final settlement.”

In a situation like this, being dependent on just one job can give you major setbacks. Hearing “Today is your last day” can be quite devastating and could even become worse if you don’t have a backup plan. Having a “PLAN B” or a “Back up Plan” may help. It not only gives you a feeling of financial security but does a whole lot of good.

What is a “Plan B” or Back Up Plan?

Plan B is what you do when your ambitious,  and great plans just do not work out!

It might not be your first choice but should be just as great as the first choice. It could emanate from your hobbies, your unexpressed or unused skill set or maybe just a wonderful opportunity known to you.

Personally speaking, i was a Project Manager in an E-Commerce company and on the side i started learning Digital Marketing. I started with making 2000 rupees a week by working few hours and i thought that 8k a month is not a bad side income. In just few short weeks, it turned out to be 5k/week and then in 3 months, i was making more than what i could earn in my full time job.

If you are a Banker and you want to learn digital marketing, this is how you should implement your plan

- Start learning the basics of digital marketing

- Once you learn the basics, see which specific area of digital marketing are you more interested in

- Upskill yourself in the area you're more interested in

- Implement your skills so you have some case study before you start approaching clients for work

- NEVER inflate your prices with clients because it is a HUGE turn off. We all should know what you're worth of, so if you are worth of 10k, only ask 10k. Stick to the price that you think you're worth of.

Always remind yourself that your “side hustle” is still a “hustle” and not a “hobby”

In today’s ever-changing scenario, factors like outsourcing or “insourcing” or changed migration laws etc have created a volatility like never before, millions of jobs are threatened every time a new President takes over in a distant country or a new CEO takes over your company. Not having a contingent plan may rather be unsmart.  find out how having a “Back up Plan” may save you the horror.

We're Told Stress Is Normal

Stress at Work

We live in times where being stressed is so normalised that it is not even considered a problem to be stressed. When on a job, you are expected to be at your productive best, even after working overtime almost every day!

Being a part of a “multicultural team” and  always learning to upskill yourself while striving to satisfy and delight your clients and boss at their earliest convenience? Is it a bit too much for you to calmly sail through? And on the top of that ,is your job threatened every now and then?

We feel you there!

It is only a matter of time that your mind and body starts giving in to such stress.

A “Back up plan” might however provide you a cushion to fall back on at times of distress like pay cuts, mandatory transfers, impossible shifts or even losing the job.

Don't Adjust Being At The Survival Mode

Do you want to just survive or build some wealth for yourself too? It is natural that people with a side hustle are always motivated and are more likely to build up massive wealth over a period of time owing to extra income of that  “side gig’. If you put in the work, your “plan b” might even work out better than your “Plan A”!

Boost Your Confidence

If you live with the fear of losing your job, it is less likely that you would perform at your peak .The fear of your boss not being happy or the entire office shifted to a different location or even the company itself sinking down would be less troublesome to you if you had an assurance of you still having money and resources to take care of your family and other important things. Turns out, you will fare better with your “Plan A” because you have a plan "B"

Redefine Success or Redesign life

What if your side hustle, turned out to be better than your primary goal. I started my career as a corporate banker and writing was my side hustle. I used to write emails and resumes for my colleagues, sales letters for my clients and love letters for my friends.

It has been 3 years since I quit my job and I have carried my laptop and work across India and abroad writing ad copies and blogs at most exotic and picturesque locations and at the safety of my home in such unforeseen pandemic. In hindsight, I feel my “Plan B” worked better and I get to live a life I had never imagined while working 6 days wearing formals and carrying lunch boxes to my office every day.

I am sure, many of you would like to start a side hustle now and have questions about how to choose a skill or sector and how to “Plan” it up. But Remember it requires as much as planning as your primary career, so we will take that up in my next blog.
